Since manufacturers no longer stuff huge engines into small cars thanks to well... laws, regulations and the marketplace. I was thinking how to fix that in a hypothetical way. Simple rules; stay within the auto group and keep the drivetrain orientation (no FF->FR, etc). Yes, many performance cars already have huge engines but they’ve also received massive chassis and suspension upgrades as well. And that’s just lame. Power>*

Here are some of my examples:

A BMW 3-Series with the turbo 4.4 V8

A Fiat500 with the pentastar V6.

A Chevy Malibu with the twin turbo 3.6l V6.

What other tire munching combinations can you think of?

Let’s put a ford engine into an AC.

Nissan 370Z with a truck engine V8

Defining what a muscle car is these days is as confusing as defining sports cars but I thought size had nothing to do with it. Just a big engine in a normal car so the 550i would be a modern example.

Muscle trucks are easier.

Colorado with LT4.

F150 with Voodoo.

HellRam.

Toyota 86 with the 5.0 V8

FocusRS with the 450hp ecoboost

Audi TTS with the S8 plus twin turbo V8

Size has everything to do with it. Simply put, it’s a “full size” engine in a compact or intermediate “standard” car.

A 1970 Caprice with a 454 isn’t considered a muscle car, but a Chevelle with that same motor definitely is.

Now if you stuffed the BMW V12 into a 5 series, now we’re talking!

The BRZ is primed for this. Could drop a big ‘Yota v8 in it or a big Subbie 6.

Fiesta or Focus with a Voodoo longitudinally mounted, like the old Ford Racing kits for the Focus.

I always felt this was a modern-day muscle car, of a sort:

Kinja'd!!!

5.3L V8, 4k lbs, 0-60 in 6.7 seconds, standing 1/4 mile 15.1 seconds @ 92 mph. http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/2009-c…

To me, in a sense, this is a modern-day equivalent of the El Camino (if you squint really hard and tilt your head a little bit) with two more doors.

The big problem that you’ll run into is packaging, especially given modern crash safety requirements - current platforms were optimized for the 4-cylinder turbocharged engines that are currently en vogue, and most no longer support the “there’s no replacement for displacement” mentality of a V6.

(It is worth noting that this may well change, however, with both European regulators and the EPA starting to use real-world emissions testing, European regulators cracking down on the loopholes in their regulations, Europe switching to a more realistic test cycle in 2017, European regulations including particulate number restrictions (which will REALLY hurt the current DI turbo gas trend) starting in 2017, and both the EPA and CARB phasing in stricter particulate mass regulations and allowing less enrichment under boost starting in 2017.)

However, muscle cars were shitboxes with big engines. I’ll start with the Chevy Malibu, which you listed, and it’s on the right track (platform mates with DOHC V engines, so it’s got space for my idea)... but you picked the wrong engine. See, the 3.6 twin turbo V6 won’t be long for the world with emissions laws, and turbos hurt reliability anyway, and they can be surprisingly hard to package, especially when you’re talking FWD V6. Go for an LT1 in its nose. (I mean, it wouldn’t be the first time GM shoved a small block V8 in a milquetoast FWD family sedan.)

Nissan Micra with the flat-pane VK45DE they use in Super GT and LeMans.

“keep the drivetrain orientation”

Now if you accidentally added a FWD based AWD system under that fiesta...

Honda’s “turd of an F1 engine” mounted transversely in a CR-Z:

(If you must, then rebadge it as an Acura and call it the new RSX-S, or the reborn Integra Type R.)

I suppose it was...but that was a little too crazy and involved a lengthening of the chassis. I would like to somehow just cram a base LS into the Elise’s engine compartment.

What rules stop them from doing this? I thought it was more common sense. If you put the M5's V8 in the 2-series it’s going to be nose-heavy and expensive for a small car (which consumers don’t like) and steal sales from the more expensive 5er they’d rather you buy. You can get hundreds of horses from a TTI6, so why bother?

I’d like the Viper’s engine to get into something. Hellviper. And while I’d never buy a current GT-R, the more cars that can go that fast, the better.
